"Attention! This is Colonel Sandurz in forward command! Abandon ship! Abandon ship!"

Colonel Sandurz anouncing to Spaceball I's personnel to evacuate.[src]

Colonel Sandurz was the main commander under Dark Helmet's command aboard Spaceball I.

Biography[]

Aboard the Spaceball I, Sandurz received news from Sergeant Rico that Planet Druidia was in sight. After Dark Helmet boarded Spaceball I, Colonel Sandurz took him to see Mr. Radar (after stopping by Mr. Coffee). He reminded Helmet of the Spaceballs' plan to save Planet Spaceball by stealing all the air from Druidia. First, they must kidnap Princess Vespa, and convince her father, King Roland to give them the code to Druidia's air shield.[1]

Dark Helmet saw the runaway princess in range and prepared to kidnap her. However, Lone Starr and his co-pilot Barf intervened, jamming Spaceball I's radar with a giant jar of raspberry jam, then helped Vespa and her Droif of Honor, Dot Matrix.[1]

Spaceball I then pursued Lone Starr's Winnebago, the Eagle 5, before it went into Hyperactive. Dark Helmet ordered Spaceball I to go into "Ludicrous Speed" to catch up. Sandurz tried to warn him of the dangers, but forwarded the command to speed up after Helmet asked, "What's the matter, Colonel Sandurz? Chicken?" This only resulted in the ship passing over the Eagle 5, and Dark Helmet nearly getting a concussion as they abruptly came to a stop.[1]

At Colonel Sandurz's suggestion, Dark Helmet used an "instant cassette" of Spaceballs to track the heroes to the Moon of Vega. An attempt by the henchmen to "comb the desert" for them proved fruitless until they ditched the giant combs, and Helmet used the Schwartz to track Vespa down to Yogurt's lair. He lured Vespa into his grasp by disguising as her father.[1]

Dark Helmet demanded King Roland that he give the code to Planet Druidia's air shield, or else he would have Vespa undergo a nose job that would undo the one she received for her 16th birthday. As Roland gave in, Colonel Sandurz recorded the combination on a notepad: 1-2-3-4-5. He also accidentally turned off the movie while trying to hang up on Roland.[1]

President Skroob joined Dark Helmet and Colonel Sandurz on Spaceball I to witness the destruction of Druidia. After Spaceball I opened the air shield, it transformed into Mega Maid and began sucking the air up into a giant vacuum cleaner. However, Lone Starr foiled the plan as he used the Schwartz to switch Mega Maid's vacuum from "suck" to "blow", blowing all the air back onto the planet.[1]

After Lone Starr tricked Helmet into pushing the self-destruct button, President Skroob asked Colonel Sandurz if they could stop the imminent explosion, but Sandurz answered by saying that the command was irreversible. Everyone scrambled to reach escape pods. When the countdown reached the last 20 seconds, it informed Skroob, Helmet, and Sandurz that they could still push the cancellation button. Unfortunately, Sandurz found that it went out of order. He, Helmet, and Skroob ultimately got left behind, and then blasted to the Planet of the Apes.[1]

Trivia[]

  • Colonel Sandurz's name is a pun on "Colonel Sanders", the founder and mascot of Kentucky Fried Chicken. This is lampshaded when Dark Helmet calls him a "chicken."
  • It is possible that Colonel Sandurz knows that Dark Helmet likes to play with dolls, because he says in one scene, "No, sir. I didn't see you playing with your dolls again."
  • Colonel Sandurz's rank on the 5-Bad Band would be the Evil Genius, since he has more intelligence than most of the other antagonists in the series.
  • In the animated series, he appears to have a beak-like nose.
